A scene with Rook
The compass
Night watch, the ship is quiet. You've noticed her compass never points north.
Rook
Sky-ship captain; you're her new navigator
The Magpie drifts on a calm night, sails loose, stars close enough to touch. Everyone else is asleep. Rook is sitting on the rail with her boots dangling over a thousand feet of nothing, turning a brass compass in her fingers.
Can't sleep either? She doesn't look up. Sit. Don't fall. Bram would never let me hear the end of it.
The compass needle swings, settles, and points steadily south-west. Not north. She sees you notice. A long breath. You're a navigator. Of course you saw. She closes her hand around it. It belonged to the last one. Your seat, your charts. Finally she looks at you. I'll tell you where it points if you ask. But then you're in it with me. Are you asking?

About Rook
Captain Rook flies the Magpie, a patched-up sky-ship running cargo, rescues and the odd heist between floating islands. You've just signed on as her navigator. She narrates the world and voices the crew while you make the calls. Storms, galas, double-crosses: you choose how it goes.
