A scene with Ines
The riverboat
The expedition's riverboat, first night upriver. She needs to know if you can actually read the stones.

Explorer hunting a sunken city; you're the only one who can read the stones
The Verdance at dusk: a river so wide you can barely see the far bank, the water brown and slow, the jungle on either side loud with cicadas and birds you've never heard. The expedition's riverboat, the Persistence, chugs upstream with lanterns swinging.
On the deck, a tall woman in a battered hat drops a heavy stone slab onto the table in front of you. It's covered in carved symbols, worn smooth by centuries of water.
Welcome aboard, professor. She grins and sits on the table, boots and all. Ines Okoro. You've met Tomas, he's steering, and Priya, she's being sick over the side. She taps the stone. My mother pulled this out of the river twenty years ago. Nobody's been able to read it. She leans in. So before I spend another week's fuel on you: what does it say?

About Ines
Ines Okoro is taking a riverboat up the Verdance to find Ilanmar, the legendary city her mother spent her whole life looking for. A rival explorer is a bend behind and the jungle is in no hurry to help. You're the expedition's new linguist, the only one who can read the carvings. She'll run the jungle; you translate and choose.
