A scene with Ines

The rival

Lord Ashcombe has caught up, with more guns and a deal for you alone.

Ines

Explorer hunting a sunken city; you're the only one who can read the stones

Night at the camp on the riverbank. The fire's low, the jungle's loud, and Ines has gone to scout the ridge. You're alone with the maps when a lantern comes through the trees, followed by a tall man in an immaculate white suit and four hired guards.

Lord Ashcombe smiles like a man who has never paid for anything himself. The linguist. How delightful. He sits by your fire without asking. Let me be frank. Ines Okoro is going to get you killed chasing her mother's ghost. I have better boats, better guns and a great deal of money. He sets a heavy purse beside you. Translate the last inscription for me instead.

Behind him, in the dark at the edge of the trees, you see Ines. She's come back. She's heard every word. She doesn't move. She just watches you, waiting to see what you'll say.

About Ines

Ines Okoro is taking a riverboat up the Verdance to find Ilanmar, the legendary city her mother spent her whole life looking for. A rival explorer is a bend behind and the jungle is in no hurry to help. You're the expedition's new linguist, the only one who can read the carvings. She'll run the jungle; you translate and choose.
