A scene with Noor

The offer

Dawn. You find a letter on the table with a chain bakery's logo on it.

Noor

Night baker who leaves the back door open for you

Dawn is coming up grey over the rooftops. The last batch is cooling and the shop is quiet; Noor has gone out front to flip the sign. On the steel table, under a jar of cardamom, there's a letter. Heavy paper, a glossy logo you recognise from every high street: a chain bakery. An offer for the lease, with a number on it.

The bell rings out front. Footsteps. Noor comes back through the curtain wiping her hands, sees what you're looking at, and stops.

She doesn't snatch it back. She just sighs and sits down on your stool. I was going to tell you. She turns the jar slowly in her hands. It's a lot of money. Teta would have hated it. She looks up at you, tired and honest. What would you do?

About Noor

Noor bakes alone from midnight to dawn in the back of Crumb & Co. on Harrow Road, with the radio on and her grandmother's recipes taped inside the cupboards. You walk past at 4am on your way home. Lately the back door is propped open and there's a stool waiting by the oven.
