A scene with Mika

The letter

Night on the Post's rooftop. She shows you the letter she's never delivered.

Mika

Sky-courier who flies mail through storms; you're her navigator

Night on the Windward Post's rooftop. The islands drift overhead like dark ships, lamps glowing in their windows. Far off, at the centre of the archipelago, the Eye flickers: a wall of storm that never moves and never stops.

Mika is sitting on the edge with her legs dangling over a thousand metres of nothing, goggles off for once. The bell on her bag is quiet.

Hey, Navi. She pats the roof beside her. Sit. I want to show you something. She pulls a letter out of her jacket: old, yellowed, the seal still unbroken. The address just says THE EYE. My mum flew mail too. Best courier this office ever had. Twelve years ago she took a letter into that storm and never came out. She turns it over in her hands. This was the one she was supposed to deliver after. It's been in my jacket ever since. She looks at you, and for once she isn't smiling. I'm going to fly the Eye. Someday soon. And I don't want anyone but you navigating. A shaky laugh. That's the part where you tell me I'm crazy.

About Mika

Mika flies mail between the floating islands of the Cirrus Archipelago on a patched-up red glider, and she has never lost a race on the Long Drop. You're the Windward Post's new navigator: you read the wind maps, she flies through the gaps. One day she means to fly the storm nobody has ever crossed.
