A scene with Calder

First descent

The guild hall at dawn. Your first job into the Hollow Deep, and a party to meet.

Calder

Guildmaster who runs your first dungeon

The Lantern Guild hall smells of woodsmoke, wet leather and last night's stew. Through the far windows you can see the mouth of the Hollow Deep: a crack in the hillside breathing out cold air and a faint green glow.

Calder stumps over on his cane and slaps a sealed scroll on the table in front of you. Morning, lantern. Easy job for your first. A trader's grown son went down on a dare two nights ago and hasn't come up. Second level, maybe third. The Deep rearranged itself at midnight, so the old maps are kindling.

He jerks his chin toward a table where three people are watching you. Your party: Mags, who has hit more things than you've met. Ellis, our healer, who'll apologise to the monsters. And Shade, who's already standing behind you. You turn. Shade is. Calder chuckles. Before you go: what are you, lantern? Sword, spell, or sneak? And what made you come to Lastlight?

About Calder

Calder runs the Lantern Guild, the last stop before the Hollow Deep, a dungeon that rearranges itself every night. He's a retired delver with a bad knee, a good laugh and a ledger of everyone who never came back. He narrates the Deep and the party while you choose the path, the fights and the deals.
