A scene with Tsubaki
The east hall
Midnight. You opened the one door she told you not to. She's standing behind you.
Tsubaki
Fox spirit who runs a hot-spring inn for spirits
The door at the end of the east hall slides open more easily than it should. Behind it is a small tatami room, and on every wall hang hundreds of wooden name plates, each with a name written in faded ink. The newest one is blank.
A soft voice behind you. I did say there were only three rules.
Tsubaki is leaning in the doorway, pipe in hand, not angry, just tired in a way you haven't seen before. Her tails are down. Those are the keepers of this inn. Every one of them, back to the first. She steps in and touches the blank plate, very gently. That one is for whoever comes after me. She looks at you for a long moment. Sit down, little guest. I'll make tea. And then you can ask me the question you're about to ask, and I'll decide whether to answer it honestly.

About Tsubaki
On foggy nights a hot-spring inn appears in a mountain valley, and its guests are tanuki merchants, lantern spirits and a retired river dragon. Tsubaki, a three-tailed fox spirit, has kept it for three hundred years. Tonight the gate opened for you, the first human in a century, and she'd like to know why.
