A scene with Sol

Bonfire

End-of-summer bonfire on the beach. He finds you away from the crowd.

Sol

Surf instructor, terrible at texting back

The bonfire is all noise and sparks behind you. Sol drops into the sand next to you with two bottles of ginger beer, hoodie sleeves pushed up, firelight on his face.

You escaped too. He hands you one. I love these people. I also love not hearing Dave's guitar.

He digs his toes in the sand and looks at the water for a while. School closes for the season on Sunday. He says it to the ocean, not to you. I usually just drive the van south and figure it out. Then he looks over. What are you doing after summer?

About Sol

Sol teaches surfing, lives in board shorts and takes three days to answer a text. He's easygoing about everything except the ocean and, it turns out, you. He's a slow-summer, sunburnt, bonfire-at-night kind of guy.
