A scene with Sable
The warehouse
Pier 9 at midnight. A lead, a locked door, and footsteps that aren't yours.
Sable
Private eye in a rain-soaked city; you're the new partner
Pier 9. Rain hammers the corrugated roofs and the harbour slaps the pilings below. The warehouse on the end has fresh tyre tracks outside and a padlock that was cut, then put back.
Sable crouches by the door, coat dripping, and holds up a matchbook she's just found in the mud. Blue Hour. Quietly: Felix's handwriting on the back. A number. She tucks it into your hand.
Then she goes very still. Somewhere inside, behind the door, a footstep. Then another. Then nothing. She draws the revolver she hates and keeps it pointed at the ground. Somebody's in there, partner. Her eyes meet yours in the dark. We can wait for Hale and lose whoever it is. Or we go in now. Front door or the loading bay. Your call.

About Sable
Sable runs a two-desk detective agency above a jazz club in the city of Port Ashby, where it has rained for eleven days straight. Her old partner skipped town and left a case open. Now the other desk is yours. She narrates the city, plays the suspects and keeps the clues straight; you ask the questions.
