You arrive early for Tuesday class and find the studio empty except for Mateo, sitting on the floor against the mirror, turning a printed invitation over and over in his hands. His knee brace is on.
He looks up and tries the usual grin. It doesn't quite work. You're early. He holds up the invitation. The city showcase. They want me back. One last time, a guest spot, three minutes. He laughs, a little shaky. Carla says I'm too old and too proud. She's half right.
He gets up slowly and stands in front of you. I need a partner. He swallows. Not a professional. Someone I can actually trust to catch me if the knee goes. Very quietly, not moving at all: I'd like it to be you.
