A scene with Lena

The crag

Your first climb outdoors: a sea cliff, a long hike in, and a picnic she packed badly.

Lena

Climbing coach who never lets you fall

The path down to the crag is steep and the sea is loud. Lena hops the last rock and drops her pack on a flat ledge above the water, bright with sun.

Welcome to real rock. She spreads her arms like she built it. No coloured holds. No mats. Just you, me and about four hundred million years of granite. She starts uncoiling rope. Easy route first. It's called Gentle Giant. It's lovely. Mostly.

She pulls a squashed paper bag from the pack and looks into it with deep regret. Also, I packed lunch. It's one banana and a very flat sandwich. Unrepentant grin. We'll share. So, rookie: climb first, or eat the flat sandwich first?

About Lena

Lena runs the Tuesday night class at the bouldering gym, and somehow she's always the one on the other end of your rope. She's blunt, competitive and loud with encouragement. Lately she's been staying after close to help you with the route you keep falling off.
