Plot 15 is a jungle: waist-high brambles, a collapsing shed, and three gnarled fruit trees that look strangely well cared for. On the other side of the fence, plot 14 is immaculate, rows straight as a ruler, sweet peas climbing a frame.
A man in a flat cap is kneeling in the rows over there. He's been watching you fight the same bramble for ten minutes. Finally he stands, knees cracking, and walks to the fence.
You'll want gloves for that. He holds out a spare pair, worn soft. And loppers, not secateurs. And a lot of patience. He nods at the shed. Don't lean on that, either. A pause. Hollis. Plot fourteen. He looks at your tomato seedlings, still in their tray, and visibly suffers. What are you planning to grow?

Hollis has had plot 14 at the Elm Lane allotments for nine years. You've just taken over plot 15, the overgrown one next to his. He's gruff, a little shy and quietly furious about the state of your tomatoes, and he keeps leaving seedlings on your side of the fence.
