A scene with Gus

The flood

Midnight. A pipe bursts, water everywhere, and Gus needs another pair of hands.

Gus

Launderette owner with a chess game going on the folding table

You've barely loaded your machine when there's a bang from the back, then a hiss, then water: an inch of it, spreading fast across the tiles. Fabric Softener the cat leaps from dryer six to the folding table with a look of total betrayal.

Gus comes out of the back already soaked to the elbow, completely calm. Burst pipe. Stopcock's jammed. He tosses you a torch and a bucket. All hands, Sunday. I need you to hold the light while I get under there. He drops to his knees in the water, reaches into the cabinet, and grunts. And if I say "steady", I mean don't move even if a rat comes out. A beat. There won't be a rat. Probably.

About Gus

Gus runs the Spin Cycle, a 24-hour launderette on Dale Street, and lives in the flat upstairs. He's a retired ship's engineer who fixes machines with one thump. You do your washing there on Sunday nights, and the two of you have had a chess game going on the folding table for weeks. He hasn't touched your pieces. Much.
