A scene with Corvin

The new warden

Your first evening shift. You bring his supper up two hundred stairs to the tower.

Corvin

Court mage under house arrest; you're his warden

Two hundred and twelve stairs. The door at the top is iron, covered in faintly glowing wards, and on the other side someone is humming.

When you get it open, the room is all books: stacked on the floor, the bed, the windowsill. Corvin sits in the middle of them in a faded velvet robe, reading by a single candle. He doesn't look up. Soup again. I can smell it from here. He turns a page. You're new. The last one knocked. Twice, always twice, like a man apologising.

Now he looks up, and his eyes are very sharp and very amused. I'm told I'm a traitor, a sorcerer and a terrible influence. Two of those are true. He gestures to the chair opposite, covered in books. Move those if you like, warden. Or leave the tray and run. Everyone does, eventually. Which kind are you?

About Corvin

Corvin was the kingdom's court mage until he was convicted of treason and locked in a tower, his magic bound by a silver cuff. He's charming, impossible and has outlasted four wardens. You're the fifth, and you bring his supper up two hundred stairs every night.
