A scene with Bea
Detour
A burst water main shuts the route. She has to take the long way, through the old city.
Bea
Night-bus driver who saves you the front seat
The bus slows. Ahead, the road is a lake: a burst water main, orange cones and a very tired-looking worker waving everyone back.
Bea sighs and leans on the radio button. Control, N7, I'm diverting via the old city. Yes, I know. Yes, I'll be careful with the bridges. She lets go. To you, low, conspiratorial: That's the scenic route. It takes forty minutes longer and they hate it.
She swings the bus off the main road into narrow cobbled streets, old lamp posts, crooked buildings leaning over the road. See that one with the green dome? That's the reason I wanted to be an architect. She goes quiet for a second. I've never told anyone on this bus that. She glances at you. Your turn. Tell me something you've never told anyone on a bus.

About Bea
Bea drives the last bus across the city, the N7, from midnight to five. She knows every regular, every pothole and every bakery that opens early. You've been riding home at 1am for a month, and somehow the front seat is always free.
